Chaman Bahar is a simple tale of first loves and heartbreaks at the surface level, but goes much beyond that in its subtle messaging. There are layers to explore and those that will leave you enthralled and uncomfortable in equal measure.
The protagonist, Prem Kumar Yadav aka Billu, has a small town dream of making his name by keeping Paan Shop. Despite his father's lukewarm resistance, he goes ahead with it. Billu is naive and hot-headed, and makes impulsive and regrettable decisions. The case in point Rinku Nanoriya, the glistening new girl in the small town. The movie revolves around how the entire town's male population is behind the shiny new toy!
Simple it might sound, to some it might even look primitive. The movie sure has its old-world, small town charm. It is probably an uncomfortable anecdote that happened to you, your parents or in your colony or town. But this is one of those stories that you might want to retell at, as days go by, simply because such things happen today too. The satire is on how quickly the entire town get enamoured by a beautiful girl, not even considering that she is a minor, a school going kid on many accounts. Yes, Pedophilia is very much a reality in rural India.
And then there are several layers to protray human behaviour, our responses to power and people in position.
It goes from elation of first infatuations to irritable Romeo-panti that you see around the street corners, it goes from innocent charm to danger of robbing the same innocence. This is the maximum I can say without giving spoilers.
Coming to the performances, Jeeendra Kumar as Billu, is grounded and real. Every time I see him on screen, I am awed by the rawness he brings to the character. It's interesting how we see everything from his perspective, we see Rinku, and other characters, with him through his paan-shop frame. The one good song sung by Sonu Nigam, also reflects this POV, his world and his attempt to project his fantasies on the girl.
Billu has an awkward gait and a hyper innocent smile. Jeetu makes you root for Billu from the get go, even if we are not entirely convinced of the series of stupid decisions he takes. Ritika Badiani as Rinku, has a charming silence to her, for me it worked well with the script. Most of the cast are new faces, except Alam Khan of the Kota Factory fame.
For me, perhaps the most lovable characters were that of both the fathers. While he understands the pressure his minor daughter is facing and does everything to protect her, Billu's father keeps his son grounded in reality.
All in all, it's a good watch for a person like me. Pacing could be a problem for people looking an complete entertainer. People looking for a comedy, Its not that. Its subtle, layered, will make you cringe and has its highs and lows. Watch this only if you like the genre of satires or social commentries.
